Drugs, sex and BMX?

TEST

I remember watching trailers as a youngster and seeing the FBM crew necking back beers, parading around with strippers and then jumping some of the biggest dirt jumps ever. The VHS; Albert St is a good depiction of this… I wanted to be like those guys and so I drank beers, listened to 80’s rock music and tried to do crazy stunts on my bike. They glamorized that lifestyle and I bought into it.

Gone is the 80’s rock music from BMX. Gone is the crazy beer drinking and eating lightbulbs. In this new DUB trailer the music is street influenced Dubstep and quite clearly, someone’s snorting an enormous line of cocaine.

I remember being pretty influenced by those videos back then. I wonder how influenced kids will be by this sort of thing today?

Who says they have to be role models, or are trying to be role models? It’s their own lives they’re choosing to document, let them do what they want.

Just to clear it up, It is Ketamin.
Mark’s comment sums it up really, we aren’t trying to promote it, Just showing what we get up to.
    Don’t take it too seriously!

Influencing kids in this way is well out of order.

Ride magazine should get a grip too, the portrayal of drugs in the magazine is disgraceful.

It IS irresponsible, just as getting drunk enough to eat light bulbs and piss on each other IS irresponsible. It’s also inevitable that kids are going to be influenced by it. These are the realities of being a group of impressionable young men as many bmxers are. I don’t think it should affect people’s video making habits, it’s just a bit of a shame that some kids could get really fucked up by it, just as kids have been fucked up trying to emulate other riders’ dangerous tricks, and people’s houses have been fucked up by bmxers trying to look cool in front of their mates at parties.

There’s a fine line so far as drugs goes between representing what goes on and actively promoting it. Ride has always promoted getting wasted, so at least there’s some consistency.

I always remember a Robbie Morales interview where he said he didn’t like the way BMX was always represented that way, then he signed up a load of stoners for the Fit team. That pisses me off more tbh

We can all sit here and slag off those who use drugs, but the fact of the matter is millions of people use them every day of the week.
I believe it is irresponsible to glamourise drug use, it helps only to feed into the whole lifestyle bollocks. But there are two things that help sell a product or scene……..SEX and DRUGS.
As long as advertising exect’s use these two things to sell whatever product they want to market that week then the youth market are going to be influenced, if they know it or not.
Its the same with guns. Rappers dont make kids go out and shoot people but the music glamourises a lifestyle that is never atainable. Just like your picture of the guys snorting charlie. Your selling a liofestyle that is never attainable

i think its good that music is influencing bmx, especially with dubstep as it is good to ride to and has a good scene behind it.
however, i think that showing someone bunging a fat line of coke or k or w/e is too far, like fine have a joint cos its not that dangerous but glamerising class a’s is ridiculously irresponsible. not to mention younger people watch this and will be influenced, and you wouldnt want people to hate bmx more than they do because its been related to drug abuse.

  34. jake says:

    May 12th, 2009 at 16:08

to be fair tho, some aspects of bmxing are way more dangerous than the odd line of ket. all their doing is showing you what they get up to. i didnt know that was such a crime.
