Chain Reaction Cycles are proud to announce the launch of our new BMX team, where we’ll be backing top UK riders Dan Lacey , Scott Ditchburn and Ben Hennon.
As well as being the first UK street rider to be invited to X Games Street in 2010, Dan won the Best Line award at the Nike Tunnel Jam 2009 and Best Trick at last year’s Simpel Session in Estonia. Dan will compete at next month’s Simpel Sessions in Estonia and said on the new team: “It’s nice to see someone putting back, here’s to 2011.”
Newcastle-based Ben Hennon hopes to build on his recent competition success during the upcoming season. Ben’s top results include first place at the Let it Ride Bowl contest in Belgium, 2009; first place and Best Trick at Boardmasters, Newquay 2010; second place at Big in Bavaria, Germany 2010; third place at NASS Street 2010; third place at Let it Ride, Portugal 2010.
The formation of the new team will allow all the riders to continue what they do best, according to Ben: “BMX for me means travelling, riding and partying with my friends around the world. Being a part of the Chain Reaction Cycles team lets me do more of what I love.”
Scott Ditchburn, who has won a number of UK street jams in the last few years is heading to America soon to film for the forthcoming Subrosa video ‘Get Used to It’. On joining the new BMX team, Scott said: “Looking forward to the year ahead, 2011 find it and grind it.”
Throughout the year we will be releasing exclusive edits and doing what we can to support our team and help promote and develop BMX . Keep checking the site, plus our Facebook and Twitter pages for team news, videos and more.
No butcher or baker sells bikes…… that would be a bit silly now wouldn’t it?
You eat food though right?
Where do you buy it? Or what about your beer? I personally drive 163miles in my clapped out vauxhall cavalier to my nearest brewery and support them rather than a supermarket. Fuck those guys! Rage against the machine man! Power to the peope! I mean, yeah sometimes i drink my purchases on the way home, but so what? If the police ever stop me for it they wont know what hit them! Down with establishment!
Johnny, together we can do this! Lets bring down stores that might be competition for our local shops. Its not fair on them.
but we are talking about bmx bikes, be my guest over throw the government but dry your eyes first.
“.I’d cut off my nose to spite my face”.there are a few more people eating and selling “food” compared to the people making a living out of BMX. You cant compare BMX to FOOD. get me?
There is no right or wrong answer here.
However the fact is, good or bad, BMX cannot and will not be kept as a precious gemstone for the rest of its days. Sooner or later this kind of thing is going to happen whether we like it or not. I say we embrace the changes and move on.
So fecking gay those boys will be riding scooters next, when’s the halfords teem gonna be announced ??? Ride shouldn’t even publish this , bunch of sell outs
I don’t blame them, I would ride a micro scooter if the price was right or even a boris bike
For riding your bike! Jelousy is a mother fucker!
Your just pissed that they arent supporting your shop so YOU can make more money!Greed!!
It was bound to happen eventually. A big company wanting to cash in on the popularity of BMX.
To the customer, it can be good as you will get cheaper parts, but this will cause your local BMX shops to struggle and eventually close down. The local shops help out the local scene. Lots of them sponsor jams at their local skateparks. Without their support maybe some of these jams won’t happen. Are CRC gonna provide your local skatepark with prizes and help organise your local events? Nope!
What about little things like tyres from blow outs, grips, linear cables, pedals breaking etc. If you’re down your local park and something breaks, you can either go down to your local BMX shop and replace your parts and be riding again straightaway, or you can order from CRC on a Saturday and wait until Monday for your order to be processed, then a couple of days for your parts to arrive. Once your local shop is gone, you’ve only got one option.
Also you buy a bike by mail order and any problems, you’ve got to explain over the phone what is wrong then arrange to get it shipped back there. Or you could take it back to your local shop and they could fix / replace bits in minutes.
BMX shops are struggling as it is. Some will still support their local shop, whilst others will take advantage of saving themselves a few quid and buy from CRC. Local shops struggle on full trade. Getting only half the trade will close them down for sure.
Lacey & Co are taking the cash and fair play, most of us would. But they travel the world riding the best ramps at the biggest comps. They aren’t interested in going to your little council skatepark.
The bottom line is that once you lose your local shop, you’ll lose your local scene and eventually your local park.
This isn’t football. There isn’t millions of pounds in this sport. No matter how big some people think the sport now is, it isn’t. It is still a very small community and now with so many young kids taking the easy option and going for scooters instead, it could get even smaller.
Everyone here seems to be making a lot of assumptions.
Let me tell you guys something, Chain Reaction are not a bunch of suits. The guys are all super laid back and friendly. Just because they own a sucessfull business does not mean they have forgotten their roots.
Next time your local park needs some prizes for a jam you should hit them up. It might surprise you to learn they love riding, some of them have forgotten more about BMX than most of the posters on here will ever know.
I find that hard to believe. They have been selling bmx parts ‘ in depth’ for a year or so now , how would this make them seasoned bmx experts ? Or let me guess , they’ve bought bob haro and stu dawkin to advise
Obviously seventies are a bit skint,, and thought” I know let’s jump in to bed with chain reaction and start a bmx team” NSF at seventies HQ was bad enough ,,
Ok let’s do this so we will all discount the shit out of seventies products until they have no value above trade price, that way seventies won’t lose out but no one will actually make any money on their parts, we will do this until the larger superstores relize, this might take a while! By then the kids will all think it’s cheap shit and not cool, demand will go down we won’t need to sell their parts anymore, all in time for seventies to sell their now worthless distribution company to chain reaction cycles. Simples.
shitting hell all the shit ur say i bet everyone here like me shops about for parts why dis one company for lowering prices on some parts i look every where for my parts to save my money so like how can it be bad for bmx i live in essex theres only shops that sell parts for bmx at a reasonable price the likes of cycles uk and cycle king rips ya off so i dont care nice team guys and least there going x games aswell
arnt crc buying seventies out anyway? thats the romour i’ve heard
a lot of things can be said bad about crc. i know exactly how they operate being on the inside but they aren’t the faceless money grabbers that a lot are making them out to be. they are supporting my local skatepark and jams, stuff that until recently never existed in ireland… as far as big riders being signed selling out to crc being a bad thing. do you think nike6.0 jumping on the bandwagon hasnt upset a lot of smaller companies? more money, more publicity and more progress for bmx can only be good. unless your a scenester that only rides a bmx to be different to the norm?
Agreed. I think most people who have been to CRC or dealt with them directly would conclude they are a bunch of good guys who have created a store that is way ahead of the game.
There is plenty of room for everyone. There is no need for all the elitism.
There was a nice little editorial in this months DIG mag entitled “Old Time Hardcore” which talks about people researching the topic before they spew a lot of verbal diarrhea about it online. I feel this is one such topic…..
The whole CRC debarkle is hitting Northern Ireland first, then it will more than likely hit the mainland after. I work in more or less the only bmx shop in Northern Ireland and because of seventies etc selling to CRC we will loose a shed load of business and if CRC go ahead with their plan to open a bmx store down the road the shop will close and I’l be out of a job because CRC got greedy.
While I feel a certain amount of sympathy for you, unfortunately this is progression. A business model from ten years ago cannot be expected to work forever. CRC’s business model will also become outdated, they need to press on and stay at the top of their game. If they dont they will end up in your situation, someone else with a more efficient business model will come along and shove them out of the way until the next guy comes along and so the cycle continues…………
I do not blame Seventies or any other supplier, they also have to move with the times and continue to progress.
I wish you the best of luck and hope everything works out for you.
